History of RFS
The idea for the PAIRS Residents, Fellows and Students Committee first started in May 2020 during Covid Lockdown times. An Egyptian resident, who is having herIR residency training in the USA (Ayah Megahed), had good connections with SIR RFS leaders. She discussed with an Egyptian IR fellow (Rana Khafagy) the possibilities of collaboration between SIR and PAIRS on the Junior IRs level. Dr. Khafagy was involved in several PAIRS activities among which being the Egypt Regional Leader of the #IAM_PAIRS program. Soon, Dr. Khafagy contacted Dr. Al-Sibaie, the current president of PAIRS, who was so enthusiastic for the idea where it enforces the current PAIRS board vision : “Investing in Youth”.
The discussions necessitated forming a PAIRS RFS so that they can contact their peers in SIR on an official level. Soon Dr. Khafagy was appointed as head of the PAIRS RFS committee and the journey started.
7 enthusiastic residents and fellows from 4 Arab countries were recruited to the committee and communications started with both SIR RFS as well as CIRSE European Trainee Forum (ETF).
Mission Statement
- We are the voice for MENA region IR Juniors as well as students interested in our magical specialty.
- We will reach out for our peers all over the world trying to achieve a mutual long term collaboration that would work in favor of trainees all over the world.
- We will promote our specialty among medical students, promote specialty updates among residents, and fellows.
- We will guide MENA region IR trainees to find regional and international training institutes, help them find great mentors helping them throughout their journey.

“I look forward to witnessing The PAIRS RFS Committee joining efforts with all similar committees worldwide, enlighting the way for all MENA region Junior IRs to reach their goals and become leading practicing IRs.” – Rana Khafagy, MSc.
Dr. Rana Tarek Khafagy
I am an IR Consultant at Ain Shams University Hospitals (Cairo, Egypt); Holding the biggest IR unit in Egypt.
I am greatly impassioned to IR especially the embolization procedures; I do lots of UAEs, PAEs, Varicocele, pelvic varices, hemorrhoids, and bariatric embolization as well as other embolization procedures and interventional oncology with several published papers especially in the AJIR.
When I entered the IR field, the lack of females in the specialty in my country was the case. I always dreamt of playing a leadership role to inspire more ladies to join the specialty and worked on this issue with PAIRS; I published some work and surveys about the status of Women in IR in the Middle East in the JVIR and the AJIR.
PAIRS has been a unique adventure for me since I first attended as a resident with an accepted poster in 2016. I have been working for the society since then and I was part of the team that won the first PAIRS Junior games in Dubai in 2019.
Currently, I am the head of the RFS committee, the Regional Leader of #IAM_PAIRS program in Egypt, and an Editorial board member of the AJIR.
Education, training, and raising awareness have been my passion since I was a medical student and I am so happy I can fulfill this through PAIRS.

Nowadays, I work as an IR and research fellow at Frankfurt university hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. This place is considered to be the largest interventional oncology and TIPS center in Germany in addition to other different emergency embolization procedures.
I received my radiology education in general and IR specifically at Ain shams university hospitals in Cairo which I consider as my home and the main reason for learning IR skills and procedures for 5 years including hepatobiliary and renal interventions, Uterine fibroid embolization, gonadal vein embolization, prostatic artery embolization, emergency embolization, all types of venous access, implanted devices for hemodialysis and other indications.
I used to be interested in IR since I was in the 5th year of medical school and would like to learn all other subspecialties of IR and develop my current skills. I think I’m interested in teaching and know-how to deliver information in its simplest form. In addition, research is my exciting and current passion, especially for TIPS procedures.

I am currently a medical intern in Algeria. During my clinical rotations, I have attended multiple interventions utilizing radiologic technologies. I was wide-eyed at how that pinhole incision procedure can save millions of lives from a stroke in the brain down to congenital peripheral vascular malformations. Thereby, I am considering interventional radiology as a specialty in the future.
I have a special interest in research in this cutting-edge field of medicine with minimally invasive procedures and how this will improve patients’ quality of life.
Outside of studying, I do like discovering new places, jogging, playing tennis table with colleagues.

This is Mohanad Ghonim, a DR/IR radiology resident at Ain Shams University Hospitals (ASUHs), Egypt. I’ve always been amazed by the fact that radiology has to do with everything in medicine and how it plays an integral part in almost every patient’s hospital care. Moreover, IR, personally, has yet added further depth to my excitement towards the field. I love the idea that as IRs we are able to play even a bigger role in patient’s care and provide direct hands-on instantaneous life-changing interventions. All my expectations regarding the field were met and even more since joining ASUHs in August 2022 to which I’m very glad to belong and lucky to be a part of where we get to learn, interact, and get guided by masters in the IR world on weekly basis. I’m looking forward to becoming an active member in the UPRISING IR WORLD, where I would be happy to help to increase the awareness and be an advocate of IR. Even more enjoying the process and enjoying how, every day, I get to know how IR is involved in much more areas of medicine than I thought it was. Additionally, I’m aspiring to be an ABR certified DR/IR. Finally, you’ll always catch me playing either with a probe or any type of sports.

I am a second-year DR/IR resident at Ain Shams University Hospitals. I am fortunate to be under the supervision and guidance of esteemed figures who raise my expectations to new heights. Ain Shams University is a renowned institution with a top-ranked IR program in the MENA region.
I chose radiology as I am obsessed with anatomy, problem solving, technology, and catheters. IR represents the booming present and the future, embracing minimally invasive procedures. You’d find me in the IR units, neuro and body, whenever free. IR represents the present and future, embracing minimally invasive procedures. Our outpatient interventions allow patients to return to work sooner, safely and painlessly. We owe our professors and senior colleagues for establishing interventional radiology as an integral part of the medical team. Now, we must expand its horizons.
Otherwise, I like bonding with family, jogging and swimming, playing padel and soccer, watching documentaries, listening to music, researching, and surfing the internet. I enjoy mentoring people and presenting (SO MUCH). Topics of interest to me include AI, minimalism, and farming. I learn programming in my limited time-off. Oh yes, I am a big fan of Elon Musk too.
In the near future, I aim to be an ABR certified IR/DR. I also want to take part in AI-related mega projects. I also am grateful to be part of the PAIRS-RFS committee and aim to help spread the IR world to people world-wide and share our local experience.

During my university days, moving from one department to another, my favorite specialty was ophthalmology and internal medicine. Later after graduation, I realized that I’m searching for a specialty that can merge internal medicine and surgery, and, between diagnostic and minimally invasive therapeutic procedures. I was wondering; if there is an emergent coronary catheter for the heart when an acute infarction happens, why not there is a brain or visceral arteries emergent catheterization, that was when IR said hey! I am here AMEER!
I’m currently a DR resident at Damascus University, I’m so interested in being an active member of the PAIRS RFS team, hoping to learn, teach and make an effective practical transmitting of IR procedures to Syria in the upcoming days.

IR, as a subspeciality, first came to my knowledge during my internship in 2015. 6 years later, IR was still intriguing me with its innovation where countless tools can be used in various ways creating new techniques to help patients in a minimally invasive manner.
Throughout my residency & fellowship at Ain Shams University IR unit in Egypt, I’ve been trained by one of the best IR teams in the Middle East; having observed, assisted on & performed hundreds of visceral interventional procedures. If you can name it, we can do it; be it vascular or non-vascular, in the adult or pediatric age group.
IR also feeds my passion for ”learning via teaching”. Training younger colleagues impels me to constantly grow my knowledge base & revise the basics of the trade. Teaching later inspired my applauded talks; the PAIRS 2018 oral presentation about pediatric central venous access & the online introductory presentation about HCC interventions as a part of the renowned series (Was Once A Beginner) of the PAIRS RFS committee.
Simultaneously, I’ve attended many IR webinars during the Covid-19 lockdown to be exposed to different international IR experiences. I am currently working on my publications as I hope to contribute to the IR body of knowledge one day.

I am an assistant lecturer/Fellow of Diagnostic and Interventional radiology at Ain Shams University Hospitals (Cairo, Egypt); holding the largest IR unit in Egypt and one of the oldest IR units in the middle east and Africa.
I grew up in Egypt watching many of my relatives die of complications related to liver cirrhosis and HCC due to the HCV pandemic we had in our country. When I was a medical student one of my dearest professors died from hematemesis, I decided to study the guidelines for management of hematemesis due to portal hypertension and it was the first time in my life to read about the TIPS procedure, I was amazed how a rapid, minimally invasive procedure can effectively stop hematemesis refractory to endoscopic band ligation without the need for doing a major surgery, and I immediately fell in love with interventional radiology.
I like to do things by the book, I always try to follow guidelines in my practice, and I always put the patient first.
I’m especially interested in Interventional Oncology, Hepatobiliary interventions, Neuro-interventions, venous interventions, GIT bleeding embolization, embolization in trauma and other embolization procedures.
I like to teach junior residents and I also love adding to the medical knowledge by doing research work.
I spend most of my free time reading history books and watching historical documentaries.

Dr. Abdullah Abohimed
Being a junior Diagnostic Radiology (DR) resident at King Abdul-Aziz Medical City – National Guard Health Affairs, Riyadh, comes with many benefits. Located in the heart of the capital, our institute is a university-based tertiary-care center and home to one of the busiest trauma centers in the region. Strong emphasis is placed on education, research, and mentorship at our program with a breadth of teaching faculty from various backgrounds. Some of whom have been instrumental in the formation of both DR residencies and Interventional Radiology (IR) fellowships in the kingdom.
Luckily enough, I was exposed to IR early during medical school and was introduced to the star-studded IR faculty at our institute. This had enabled me to explore its applications both in the clinical and non-clinical sides. From shadowing and regularly assisting attendings on complex procedures, to actively raising awareness of IR to medical and non-medical personal, while contributing to the literature in the process.
The minimally invasive nature of procedures provided by IR is very appealing to me, and it would most certainly appeal to many other young and passionate doctors in the future. However, one must be aware that very little, if any, time is allocated for IR in medical school curricula. It is incumbent on us members of the RFS committee to “spread the word” about our specialty.

Interventional Radiology (IR) is the field of medicine currently experiencing the highest level of growth and development. In such a rich environment of opportunity and potential I found myself. I am also fascinated by the concept of a short procedure, minimally invasive with a great positive impact on the patients’ well-being.
Continuously learning new interventions, establishing scientific evidence through research, educating the medical community, and raising awareness to the public are great areas that I am interested in for personal and professional development in the field of IR.

A few years ago, I met a future expert professor “futurist”. That was interesting! I wanted to take a picture with him, so I had to chat with him for a while. I told him that I was a medical student and wanted to know the promising specialties in medicine. He responded confidently “interventional radiology”. I didn’t know clearly what that was, however, I took that picture and gave myself a chance to explore radiology and in-depth interventional radiology. I found it fascinating! Eventually! I fell in love with the field and decided to go for it! And here I am, a radiology resident in King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which is one of the top healthcare institutions in the Middle East and well known for the high quality of patient care and residents training.
I have done a double major degree in Echocardiography and MBBS. During my education, I have always found myself drawn by mental challenges and images analysis to reach a diagnosis. Having a degree in Echocardiography helped me also understand the beauty of practicing medical imaging and how understanding anatomy, body planes, and orientation make perfect sense of any diagnostic image and guide any interventional radiology procedure. Furthermore, I enjoy medical research in which I published 10 papers and achieved several international and national awards. I believe in the promising future, research opportunities, and advancement in the field of interventional radiology.

“Wow, they actually can do that!” That’s what I said to myself when I first saw a YouTube video describing a TACE procedure for HCC. From that moment I started googling “Interventional Radiology”.
”I started looking for shadowing opportunities in the US to be able to see for myself the full potential of IR. In August 2017, I was blessed to start a 3-month Observer ship with a great mentor at MD Anderson Cancer Centre which was a great learning opportunity. During my final year of medical school, I noticed how medical students knew about IR at my university. Aiming to increase medical student exposure to IR, I contacted the head of PAIRS-RFS with a project idea. Coincidentally, they have already been working on a similar project and they welcomed me to join. I believe that a lot of students would want to do IR once they knew about it and I hope with the PAIRS RFS team I can achieve that.
I recently received my Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from the Faculty of Medicine at Zagazig University. I am very interested in interventional oncology. I aspire to be a sound researcher and a top-notch clinician.

I am currently a medical intern in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. As a son of a diagnostic radiologist, I grew up between CT and MRI studies. However, during my exposure to the field of interventional radiology (IR) in my internship, I was astonished by the innovative and skillful hands of interventional radiologists. A field where clinical judgment and innovation are combined to deliver the best treatment to the patient. Thus, I determined to consider IR as a future specialty and join the community of “The New Magicians!!”.
As an aspiring interventional radiologist, I was involved in many IR-related activities like attending the last PAIRS-21 conference and several PAIRS webinars, joining the Journal of vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) media team, volunteering at many conferences, taking my electives at IR-departments, etc.
I am passionate about peer-assisted teaching, education, and research. My long-term goal is to serve this field especially at the medical students and interns level with the help of our respective IR mentors and seniors and mainly through Pan-Arabic research and awareness.

Dr. Mustafa Khater
I am a 6th-year medical student at the University of Jordan in Amman, and I aspire to specialize in Vascular IR.
My late father (may he Rest In Peace) was a diagnostic radiologist. Everyone who knew him professionally says to me that Radiology runs in my genes and he would’ve been so proud of you if he could see his son also becoming a radiologist.
Since the early days of medical school, I’ve always been fascinated by Vascular IR and how many complicated procedures can be performed through a tiny scar. The joy you see, when a patient with chronic limb ischemia comes to your clinic in a wheelchair and after the procedure comes to your clinic walking, is one of the reasons that made me love this field.
I aspire to contribute to IR in my professional career as much as possible either through patient care or clinical research. All to improve our patient’s quality of life. That’s why I believe being a PAIRS RFS member working alongside junior Arab IR physicians will help me achieve better and fulfill my dream.

I’m Sudqi, Graduate of the Hashemite University School of Medicine Class of 21’.
I’ve never thought I’d end up pursuing Radiology as a career path; Until I have started my first Radiology rotation during my fifth-year of Medical school, Since then I’ve known it’s a dream destined to be mine. I was amazed by how almost every patient that would seek medical care at any level would end up getting some type of Imaging done.
It’s more like actively orchestrating patient’s care in an anonymously selfless way. A Radiologist would have to look for everything in nothing and in the case of Interventional Radiology(IR) They would actually first-hand deal with the culprit in a minimally invasive and a ridiculously efficient way.
I aspire to offer patients of all backgrounds and levels a loving and caring experience, As simple as it sounds but I would always want to leave a patient with a smile on their face and IR is there to provide that, What’s better than doing life-saving procedures while insuring your patients that you’re providing them with latest technologies and methods.
Since Graduating I’ve completed an internship year in the Ministry of Health I’ve also volunteered in many emergency imaging departments to get exposure in the field, I have passed my USMLE Step1 in Nov22’, I am now in the process of finishing Step2 and recently started my research journey as a research assistant in one of the leading cancer institutions in the MENA region, King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC)

I’m a senior diagnostic and interventional radiology resident at Mustapha University hospital in Algiers.
I joined the radiology residency program in November 2019. Though I was delighted with the program’s diagnostic side, my passion for interventional radiology started when I first witnessed an endovascular thrombectomy case. Watching the patient move her leg after the procedure was incredible, from that moment on, I wanted to be an interventional radiologist.
I am a motivated and hardworking person who is continuously looking for ways to improve the quality of care I can provide to the patients. I think, one of the best ways to achieve this, is to exchange knowledge and experience with talented professionals from all over the world, especially from the Middle East and Africa due to similarities with my country. I believe joining the RFS team is the 1st step to do so.

“ I want to be part of that “ is what I said to myself when I attended the IR juniors’ global summit. My name is Abdulmohsen Alhussaini and I am currently a diagnostic radiology resident at King Abdulaziz Medical City National Guard Hospital in Riyadh and one day an interventional radiologist. I first encountered interventional radiology when I was a 6th-year medical student and still confused about what specialty I should major in.
I was always fascinated by minimally invasive procedures so I started looking for specialties that can provide that for me. Along this journey, I have encountered many doctors who have been great mentors for me and started to love the procedures and the versatility of it. After falling in love with the specialty, I started wondering about what the future holds for it. That is when I attended a lecture about the future of IR specialty at the IR juniors’ global summit. In that lecture, l learned about how IR is advancing both in techniques of procedures and in patient’s care and how it is evolving as a specialty.
I knew from that moment that IR was not just a medical specialty for me but a passion of a lifetime. From that moment my aim was to help with future of IR and since then I have been able to publish multiple research papers with topics related to the specialty and hopefully more to come.
I also started my journey to help anyone who was interested in this amazing specialty with a dream of one day being able to help future doctors like my mentors did with me.

Interventional radiology is where science meets art.
I am a 3rd year radiology resident at Dr Benbadis University Hospital in Constantine, Algeria. My radiology journey began in December 2022, and from the very first moment, it felt like I had found my calling.
My passion for this field fueled my determination to earn my place in the residency access exam, and the opportunity to train in interventional radiology within our department was the decisive factor in choosing this path.
Interventional radiology goes beyond solving riddles. It takes precision, speed and sharp-wittedness to restore hope when every other approach falls short. It can often be nothing less than a miracle.
Watching my professors seamlessly maneuver various techniques has profoundly inspired me, and earning their trust early on to take my first shot with a steady-hand only reinforced my devotion for this field.
I trust PAIRS to be a key milestone in this long yet adventurous journey. A place to learn, grow and connect with experts. I believe that it will provide both inspiration and support to achieve excellence and contribute meaningfully to the interventional radiology community.

Currently, I’m a medical intern at Al-Zahraa University Hospital in Egypt. Highly passionate and aspiring about interventional radiology.
I’m interested and open to all fields of IR. My great love, passion, and desire to develop and improve my knowledge about the field of interventional radiology motivated me to invest my internship in developing myself and learning more about the field of interventional radiology. Therefore, I worked as a medical volunteer in the interventional radiology department, attending conferences and workshops and in fact, I found myself in interventional radiology I gained a great deal of enthusiasm and passion to continue on my path. was and was still certain that I was on the right path.
IR truly made me amazed by its ability to transform the way we approach medicine and you can make a tangible difference in patients’ lives, treating complex conditions with finesse and often providing solutions where traditional surgery falls short. As an interventional radiologist, you aren’t just diagnosing problems; you are solving them in real time.
In addition, teaching, presenting tutorials, creating academic content, facilitating sections, presenting scientific material, and planning tutorials and workshops are also my passions since I was a medical student I’ve been so excited to fulfill this through PAIRS RFS.
Joining PAIRS RFS is a great addition to my career. I aspire to be part of and make my mark on the world in the greatest medical specialties.

I am a 6th year medical student in the University of Debrecen with special interests to become an interventional radiologist. My curiosity grew during my practices, particularly during my neurology rotation where I was shown mechanical thrombectomy procedures for stroke patients. Observing the precision with which the radiologist guided the catheter under real-time imaging was mesmerizing. I try to learn as much about IR during my free time by shadowing doctors and doing internships. I aspire to be specialize in neuro- or onco- interventions with interests in doing research. And I hope to contribute to the field during my trip of becoming an interventionist and even more after I am a trained-specialist. Being a part of the PAIRS team would help me achieve the goals of raising awareness and helping the field of IR flourish in the Arab world
